More than anything, our habits frame our everyday lives, and for those who choose to live simply, it’s no exception. We wake in the morning and fall into our routines – showering, brushing our teeth, getting dressed, making breakfast…. When adding healthy habits, like drinking enough water throughout the day, or exercising for 20 minutes each morning, or writing in a gratitude journal, for the first few weeks, you’ll have to remind yourself to practice them. Eventually, though, they’ll become routine, just like showering and brushing your teeth.
When I was 13, I took a class where we learned bits and pieces of four different languages – Latin, Spanish, German and French. At the beginning of the year, the teacher informed us that it takes 17 repetitions before something is truly memorized. (That was, of course, followed by 30 kids repeating the names of colors in German 17 times.) Now, I have no idea where she got that number, but over the years, it stuck with me. Whether I wanted to memorize a poem, break a bad habit, or change my thought process, 17 was my number.
When I decided to add positive habits into my life, I knew that keeping myself to the straight and narrow for 17 days was what it would take to make it permanent.
Follow me as I add healthy habits and positive routines to my life. I’ll post each new habit as I start it on a Tuesday, and on Friday 18 days later, I’ll let you know how it turned out. Feel free to post your own stories of habit building or to join in with me!
I can’t wait to start this journey with you!
